In New York State there are regulations for the fitting and dispensing of prescription eyewear. This is to ensure that you receive the most informed and professional care. A licensed optician undergoes an apprenticeship program or goes to school in addition to taking the necessary tests for national certification and state licensure. Licensed opticians must also complete a mandatory continuing education requirement to retain their license.
There are many variables that a licensed optician looks for when fitting you for glasses, which simply cannot be done through the computer. This includes how you hold your head and where you actually wear your glasses. These observations are crucial for the proper fit of multifocal lenses.
Additionally, a state license or an NPI (national provider ID) is required for insurance reimbursement.
